Throughout the world, the Certified Protection Professional (CPP) designation is acknowledged as the security profession's highest recognition of practitioners.  It is evidence that an individual is "Board Certified in Security Management".  The CPP is awarded based upon experience and passage of an examination that provides an objective measure of an individual's broad-based knowledge and competency in security management.  Mr. Canaan was awarded this prestigious credential in June 1997.  Ongoing professional development is required in order to maintain this certification.  The CPP is administered by the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS), the preeminent international organization for security professionals, with 32,000 members worldwide.  In order to earn this credential, I had to comply with stringent eligibility requirements consisting of certain education and/or work experience qualifications including employment in a security profession in a responsible-charge position.

Currently, Mr. Canaan one of approximately 4,500 active CPP's in the world.  The Professional Certification Board of ASIS is charged with improving the practice of security management through the testing and certification of security professionals who have met prescribed standards of performance, knowledge, and conduct.

Candidates wishing to take the CPP examination must first satisfy the following requirements:

Experience and Education:

  • Nine (9) years of security experience with at least three (3) years of which shall have been in responsible charge of a security function; or
  • An earned Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher education; and
  • Seven (7) years of security experience with at least three (3) years of which shall have been in responsible charge of a security function

Certified Protection Professionals and applicants for the CPP designation must adhere to the Code of Professional Responsibility, agreeing to:

  • Perform professional duties in accordance with the law and the highest moral principles. Non-compliance includes any acts or omissions amounting to unprofessional conduct and deemed prejudicial to the CPP designation

  • Observe the precepts of truthfulness, honesty, and integrity

  • Be faithful, competent, and diligent in discharging their professional duties

  • Safeguard confidential and privileged information and exercise due care to prevent its improper disclosure

  • Not maliciously injure the professional reputation or practice of colleagues, clients, or employees
