Security Premises Liability Expert Witness

Michael J. Canaan, CPP CFLC, provides security premises liability expert services for both plaintiff and defense firms. He opines in the areas of security adequacy; negligent hiring and retention; inadequate supervision and training; excessive or improper use-of-force; foreseeability analysis; industry best practices; professional standards; security policies and procedures; and electronic security methodology.

Mr. Canaan is an active practitioner in investigative and security management, training, and liability consulting. He has conducted assessments across the United States and Canada and in several Central and South American countries for individuals and corporations, estate residences, educational settings, corporate campuses, and at large venue events.

Since 1977, Mr. Canaan has served in military and civil law enforcement, and corporate security and investigative positions. He has been President of Trident Investigative Service, Inc. since 1991. Mr. Canaan is a past certified instructor in related disciplines and maintains active membership in numerous professional associations.

In June 1997, the American Society for Industrial Security, International (ASIS) awarded Mr. Canaan the security profession’s highest recognition of practitioners, the prestigious Certified Protection Professional (CPP). This Board Certification in Security Management is based on experience and passage of examination that provides an objective measure of an individual’s broad-based knowledge, experience, and competency in security management.

In July 2015, the Forensic Expert Witness Association (FEWA) awarded Mr. Canaan the Certified Forensic Litigation Consultant (CFLC) designation. FEWA established the CFLC in 2014 for professional members who have met the eligibility criteria requiring significant participation in FEWA activities and completion of educational courses in the subjects of forensic analysis, litigation consulting, and expert witnessing.
